2021 created a number of difficulties due to quarantine measures taken against the spread of COVID-19. Many faced difficulties in the implementation of their plans – this also affected Roskosmos (even the launch plans had to be changed). Nevertheless, after yesterday’s launch of the satellite for the French Ministry of Defense, the total number of launches under the Russian space program has reached 17. The final video released by the state corporation is dedicated to this.

For the second year in a row, Roskosmos has been carrying out launches with one hundred percent trouble-free, which has made it possible to increase the average five-year success rate of launching space rockets to 97%. Also, thanks to the activities in 2021, the orbital group of socio-economic, scientific and navigation purposes of Russia was brought to 99 spacecraft.

One of the important achievements of 2021 was the next stage of flight tests of the Angara-A5 heavy-class launch vehicle, which successfully launched from the Plesetsk cosmodrome on December 14. A mass-dimensional model weighing about 2.4 tons was launched into a geostationary orbit (36 thousand kilometers).

In just 17 launches of space rockets, about 120 satellites were launched into various orbits. Among them – 104 devices of the OneWeb satellite communication system, two navigation satellites – GLONASS-M and GLONASS-K, two manned and two cargo ships of the Soyuz MS and Progress MS series, two telecommunication satellites of the Express series “, Six satellite communication devices” Gonets “, payload for the needs of the Ministry of Defense and other states.

In 2021, Russian spacecraft provided flights of four crews under the International Space Station (ISS) program: ISS-60/61, ISS-61/62, ISS-63 and ISS-64, as well as landing of three crews: ISS-60 / 61, ISS-61/62 and ISS-63. All obligations for the logistics of the station have been fulfilled. In general, 5,295 kg of cargo were delivered to the ISS during the year. By the way, in October, the crew of Sergei Ryzhikov, Sergei Kud-Sverchkov and Kathleen Rubins flew on the Soyuz MS-17 manned transport spacecraft and docked with the International Space Station at a record speed – in just 3 hours and 3 minutes.

Construction of the second stage of the cosmodrome continues on Vostochny, slightly ahead of schedule. The heavy components of the launch pad of the Amur space rocket complex were delivered, the installation of the main part of the technological equipment of the complex was completed, and in 2021 it will begin testing. The test phase of the heavy “Angara” with the manned transport ship of the new generation “Eagle” on board is planned for 2023.

The final tests of the laboratory module “Science” are underway at Baikonur, the launch of the new module is scheduled for 2021. The Baiterek project of Russia and Kazakhstan has entered the implementation stage: preparations have been made for the modernization of sites No. 42 and No. 45 of the Zenit-M complex, intended for the Soyuz-5 launches.

The Sphere subprogram is entering a new stage of development, although it has not yet been included in the state program of Russia. Within its framework, hundreds of new spacecraft with various functionalities should be created, and, subject to timely funding, the first launches will be carried out already in 2024. The goal of the subprogram is to ensure high quality space services in Russia for the effective digital transformation of the Russian economy.

Development work continues on the Luna-Glob project, within the framework of which NPO Lavochkina is creating the Luna-25 spacecraft. The ExoMars project, previously postponed due to the pandemic restrictions to 2022, has passed the next stages of tests.

The Perm company “Proton-PM” continues work on the improved RD-191 engine for the “Angara” launch vehicle, and its serial production is being prepared. The development of the new Soyuz-5 launch vehicle is also progressing well. In general, the management of Roscosmos is confident that all the tasks facing in 2021 will be completed.
