On Friday, November 13, the ENOG 17 conference ends, which started on November 9 and was held this time in the online format. ENOG is the region’s premier conference for technicians, network engineers and the entire Internet community.

Opening the event, Hans Petter Holen, Managing Director of RIPE NCC, spoke about the challenges of the pandemic and highlighted how quickly and easily colleagues switched to virtual communication. He said that the RIPE NCC is striving to find a balance between the implementation of laws and technical regulations to ensure the smooth operation of the community, as well as the fact that the Russian language has been included in the list of major languages to support. Now many key materials will be translated into Russian. We are talking about the main materials related to membership in the RIPE NCC, the use of Internet resources and, in general, with the interaction of the RIPE technical community.

“We intend to take all the necessary legal steps to ensure that the Internet is not disrupted. In addition, the organization is always working to expand multilingualism for participants, because every year the requests for support for new languages are increasing, – said Holen. “Of course, the more languages there are, the more community members can be involved in active work”.

During the conference, it was again noted that IPv4 addresses had run out to be issued, so you should stop relying on the old protocol for network development and take the most serious approach to the early implementation of the IPv6 protocol. A huge number of RIPE NCC members in the region have already received new IPv6 addresses from the RIPE NCC, but their usage is extremely low. In Russia, only about 5-6% of traffic goes through IPv6, compared to the global average of 30%, and in the USA and Germany, the new protocol is already used by more than 50% of all Internet traffic.

On the second day of the conference, Mikhail Anisimov, ICANN, Head of Stakeholder Engagement in Eastern Europe and Central Asia made a presentation. He spoke about the ICANN research project – ITHI (Identifier Technology Health Indicator), dedicated to collecting data on the operation of root and authoritative DNS servers, as well as operator equipment.

In turn, Alexander Ilyin, CTO of MSK-IX, spoke about the requirements for monitoring and how the company complies with them and exceeds the SLA requirements for the service. MSK-IX also implemented ICANN monitoring data visualization for analysis and deployed an extensive network of probes around the world to measure quality of service.

The third day of ENOG17 was remembered for the report by Alexander Azimov (Yandex). He talked about the security of BGP (Border Gateway Protocol – the main dynamic routing protocol) and how to detect route leakage using new software solutions. The speaker noted that BGP, in combination with other systems, makes it possible to ensure the safety of any routes.

For the first time the ENOG conference was held in 2021 in Moscow. Since then, it has been held in different cities and countries: Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kazan), Ukraine (Kiev and Odessa), Azerbaijan (Baku), Armenia (Yerevan), Belarus (Minsk), Georgia (Tbilisi).
