Russian scientists announced the fastest method of quantum random number generation

Scientists from NUST MISIS and the Russian Quantum Center, together with their foreign colleagues, have designed and created the fastest and most affordable quantum random number generator. The technology can form the basis for the production of commercial random number generators used in cryptography and for modeling complex systems.

Random number generators, as an essential component of many algorithms, including encryption and numerical modeling algorithms, promise to be in demand products for a whole range of areas. First, this is data encryption, the decryption of which is threatened by quantum computers. Secondly, it is used in scientific experiments. Third, the field of artificial intelligence. And with these three positions, the demand for true random number generators is not limited.

A new method for generating truly random numbers was proposed by scientists from NUST MISIS, RCC, Oxford University, Goldsmiths College and Free University of Berlin. It is based on the use of quantum properties of photons, which cannot be faked or predicted. Moreover, the scientists also proposed a method of real-time certification of the random numbers obtained by the optical generator and reached record figures in this – 8.05 GB / s.

The suggested setup looks like this. Untrusted photon source (laser) supplies radiation to one of the two input ports of the beam splitter. Nothing is fed to the second port. Photodetectors are located at the outputs of the beam splitter. Since the beam splitter is symmetric, a photon with the same and unpredictable probability will hit either one detector or another. The data from the sensors is passed through the ADC and fed to a circuit that counts the photons and generates a true random number. Its truth is confirmed by an input asymmetric beam splitter and a photodetector, which count the photons that have passed into the system.

An example of the use of such generators is the quantum-encrypted mobile calls service launched earlier this month in China. On a much smaller scale, quantum-generated random numbers are used in Samsung’s “quantum” smartphone, which also confirms the potential demand for such products.
