OneWeb has received $ 400 million in investment and plans to launch more than 500 Internet satellites by the end of 2022

Konstantin Khodakovsky

SoftBank has invested another $ 350 million in satellite Internet company OneWeb, which it deliberately bankrupted last year by refusing to participate in a funding round. It also became known about the company’s plans to deploy its space constellation using launches provided by Roskosmos. It looks like the company will have a lot of launches in the coming years, as it has to put more than five hundred satellites into orbit by the end of 2022.

Japanese technology investor SoftBank will get a seat on the board of directors of OneWeb due to its investments. The latter was saved from bankruptcy last year by a $ 1 billion investment from the UK government and Indian telecoms tycoon Sunil Bharti Mittal.

The investment will give SoftBank an approximately 30% stake in OneWeb and reduce the 42.2% stake in the UK and Mr Mittal to roughly the same level. Previously, SoftBank owned about 9% after converting $ 90 million of debt to equity as part of a rescue operation. UK will remain key shareholder with priority voting rights.

Along with SoftBank, billionaire Charlie Ergen’s Hughes Network Systems, the original investor in OneWeb and EchoStar, is also investing another $ 50 million on top of its $ 50 million initial investment.

To complete the creation of a constellation of 648 satellites in low Earth orbit, according to Mr. Mittal, OneWeb still needs an additional $ 1 billion in investments, which will be attracted either by new investors or through borrowed capital. This group will be created by the end of 2022, if everything goes according to plan. To do this, another 538 satellites need to be released into orbit. Satellite service will provide broadband Internet access services in the most remote areas of the planet. It is assumed that OneWeb is in talks with other potential investors.

“We are delighted to support OneWeb as it grows its grouping and accelerates its journey to commercialization,” said Masayoshi Son, Chief Executive Officer of SoftBank. “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Mr Mittal, the UK and Hughes to help OneWeb fulfill its mission of changing Internet access around the world.”.

Meanwhile, OneWeb’s ambition has dwindled to make it easier to attract investors. The company recently asked regulators to reduce the number of its alleged constellation of satellites from a mind-boggling 48,000 to a still impressive 6372. According to one of the informants, the number of satellites in the constellations of the next generations may be less than in the first such network, OneWeb, which is currently being created.

OneWeb faces intensifying competition from SpaceX Starlink, which has already started testing its network in the US, Canada and the UK. SpaceX has regulatory approval to launch over 40,000 satellites into low Earth orbit. Starlink already has over 600 satellites in orbit versus OneWeb’s 110.

Observers are convinced that OneWeb, despite SpaceX’s vast resources, will also be able to succeed in its business model, despite a year lag in bankruptcy proceedings. The company said it is targeting government and corporate customers rather than mass market broadband, where price competition will be stronger. Meanwhile, UK hopes investment in OneWeb will bring more money to the space sector.
