First Orion spacecraft ready for NASA’s lunar mission

Lockheed Martin announced that the first Orion spacecraft is finally assembled and ready to be handed over for loading and installation on a launch vehicle. In the first lunar mission of the new generation, Orion will go to the moon orbit without a crew. After flying around our space neighbor, the device will return to Earth, which will prove the reliable operation of all services and devices before re-sending astronauts to the Moon.

In the process of assembling the first Orion, a low-risk defect was revealed, which it was decided not to eliminate. One of the many redundant channels for data and power transmission turned out to be faulty. Access to the defective assembly with disassembly of the device was considered a greater risk than sending it as is. Plus, fixing the problem would derail launch plans.

After testing the Orion spacecraft at the NASA center, it will be fueled with fuel and consumables (ammonia, helium and nitrogen), and a launch interrupt system will be integrated, and a protective fairing will be installed. In addition to the ship itself, Lockheed Martin also developed a crew module and a launch interrupt system. The installation of Orion on the SLS carrier rocket and full preparation of the rocket for launch should be completed by mid-autumn, so that the flight under the NASA Artemis program will take place before the end of this year. If the program is executed flawlessly, a re-landing of astronauts on the moon can be expected in 2024.

Add, for NASA, Lockheed Martin is assembling three Orions. This will be followed by orders for three more vehicles for the Artemis III-V missions and three for the Artemis VI-VIII missions. As an option, the order of up to 12 devices in total is being discussed. Orions are viewed not only as manned spacecraft for flights to the Moon, but also as capsules for human flights to Mars.
