The first website turns 30 today
Today it is difficult to imagine life without the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW), and the first site was launched only on December 20, 1990, that is, exactly 30 years ago. Today, there are billions of websites, many of which are orders of magnitude more complex than simple web pages and offer images, videos, 3D graphics and a wide variety of services.

This site was originally internal to CERN (European Council for Nuclear Research). On its pages you could get information about the WWW project, which was created by Timothy Berners-Lee in 1989. The World Wide Web Was For Scientists. To implement the project, the inventor and his assistants created URIs (and, as a special case, URLs), the HTTP protocol and the HTML language. Last year, the author shared his thoughts on the development of his brainchild.

The first website was hosted originally on Berners-Lee’s own NeXT computer. On April 30, 1993, CERN made the World Wide Web software publicly available, and later an open license came along that launched a snowball. In 2021, CERN launched a project to rehabilitate this first website: info.cern.ch (you can also run the emulator of the first web browser there).

By the way, by the end of 1994, the World Wide Web numbered only 2.7 thousand sites, but the growth was exponential. In that year, one of the first search engines was born – “Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web” (then the system was renamed to Yahoo!). In 1995, 23.5 thousand sites were already working on the Internet, and at the time of Google’s registration in 1998, their number reached 2.4 million.
In 2021, there were already 29.2 million websites in operation. The psychological milestone of 1 billion sites was passed in 2021, but today the quantitative growth has already stopped at a level close to 2 billion. Currently, there is already a qualitative development, and mobile applications often turn out to be much more popular than websites.
