Facebook continues to bombard Apple with accusations – new App Store rules will change the Internet for the worse
Just yesterday we wrote that Facebook lashed out at Apple criticizing the new privacy rules for apps in the App Store. Following an article in American newspapers explaining the harms of Apple’s policies, Facebook launched another similar attack, claiming that Apple is seeking to prevent the internet from being free.
Apple responded to Facebook’s criticism in a statement to 9to5Mac, arguing that users should have a choice of whether or not to track them online, and that they deserve to know what data third-party apps collect from their devices. The company said it is not asking Facebook to change its approach to user tracking, but just wants the largest social network to be more transparent on this issue. Apple’s response seems to only further anger Facebook, which has decided to prepare a new attack.
BuzzFeed News editor John Paczkowski received a draft text that Facebook plans to officially publish tomorrow. It says Apple plans to roll out a forced software update that will change the internet for the worse. Facebook also made a surprise advocate for small businesses, arguing that Apple would harm small businesses with new App Store rules:
“Apple innovations will limit the ability to display targeted ads. To make ends meet, developers will have to charge you subscription fees or add in-app purchases. This will make Internet services more expensive and reduce the amount of high quality free content. Many small businesses say the change will be devastating for them too. “.
It is unclear if Facebook will actually publish this new article in American newspapers, but we will probably find out soon. As a reminder, Apple recently warned that it might start removing apps that track users without prior permission from them. To customize targeted advertising and measure its effectiveness, app developers and other industry participants now often use the Advertiser Identifier (IDFA), or a string of letters and numbers that are different on every Apple device. With an iPhone operating system update expected early next year, app creators will have to request permission to access IDFA via a pop-up window. Many are likely to opt out of unnecessary surveillance, which will reduce the effectiveness and profitability of targeted advertising. This change takes advantage of the privacy setting, which was previously hidden in the settings, and brings it to the fore when users open each such application.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software development, said last week that apps that fail to meet early 2021 requirements, which Apple calls App Tracking Transparency (ATT), could simply be removed from the App Store.
Apps will have to add privacy labels and obtain user permission, for example, to display targeted ads based on user data collected from third-party apps and sites; sharing device location data or mailing lists with data brokers; transmission of a list of email addresses, advertising or other identifiers to a third party ad network.
