Scientists “program” living bacteria to store data
sixteen.01.2021 [20:33],
Gennady Detinich

Prospects to condense the record a thousandfold and preserve the integrity of the data due to the self-reproduction of information in genes make scientists look for the possibility of recording data in DNA. The first interesting steps have already been taken on this path and many more discoveries will be made. Scientists from Columbia University in the USA made their contribution to the common cause, who proposed a simple system for direct recording data from a computer directly into the genome of bacteria.

Traditional methods of writing information in DNA involve encoding the ones and zeros of the data file as a combination of four nitrogenous bases: adenine, guanine, cytosine and thymine. Usually the length of the encoded sequences does not exceed 200 or 300 bases (fragments), since otherwise the accuracy of artificial DNA synthesis suffers. Reading occurs during the sequencing of the encoded sequences. The cost of this encoding and decoding process reaches $ 3500 per Mbps. In addition, sequences degrade over time and lose information. It comes out expensive and unreliable.

Back in 20021, researchers from Columbia University were able to edit the DNA of Escherichia coli plasmids using CRISPR so that they could recognize and remember the ingress of sugar fructose into bacterial cells. As part of bacterial DNA, this modified element could store 0 or 1, depending on whether fructose was fed into the solution with bacteria or not. In fact, fructose encoded a piece of DNA. Scientists could extract these data in the process of sequencing the DNA of bacteria at any time convenient for themselves, since the data – a piece of DNA with encoded information – was transferred to the colonies of bacteria in the process of reproduction from one generation to the next.

In a new study, which scientists reported in a recent issue of the journal Nature Chemical Biology, researchers were able to create conditions for recording 72 bits of data in DNA. B plasmids of live bacteria E. coli, the encoded phrase “Hello world!”, Which was then successfully read after sequencing the DNA of living bacteria.

Thus, the data was encoded directly from the PC into the DNA of living bacteria without artificial DNA synthesis. At least the savings appeared at the synthesis stage.
