Alibaba to partner with Chinese carmaker SAIC to produce electric vehicles
fourteen.01.2021 [15:09],
Alexey Razin

The Chinese electric vehicle market is luring a variety of companies, and IT players are starting to forge alliances with local carmakers to make better use of existing infrastructure. Alibaba is already an investor in Xpeng Motors, and now it has also become a partner of the largest state carmaker SAIC in the production of electric vehicles of the new IM brand.

A joint venture with SAIC, Alibaba and the state investment fund Shanghai Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park Development was established on December 25. The automaker received 54% of the capital in it, two other participants – 18% each. I must say that SAIC and Alibaba have already had experience of cooperation in the creation of cars, starting in 2021, but for the first time they are joining forces to produce electric vehicles.

The firstborn of the IM brand will be an electric sedan equipped with CATL traction batteries and NVIDIA processors as part of active driver assistance systems. At the first stage, functions such as automatic parking are promised, and Alibaba’s contribution will be expressed in the integration of social networking functions into the multimedia system of an electric vehicle. Electric sedan pre-orders will begin in April, and crossover will be added to the IM range in 2022.

Search giant Baidu announced a partnership with private company Geely to co-produce electric vehicles earlier this week. Foxconn, known as a contract manufacturer of Apple mobile devices, also collaborates with Geely in the production of electric vehicles, but at the same time offers its “reference” platform for creating electric vehicles. Taxi aggregator Didi partnered with BYD to launch an electric sedan in November. Partners expect to sell at least one million electric vehicles per year by 2025.

Foxconn also helps Byton develop electric vehicles of the same name. Foxconn has been supplying components for this type of vehicle for several years, its partners are BMW and Tesla. By the middle of this decade, the Chinese authorities intend to bring the share of electric cars to 20% of all cars sold in the country. Last year, 25.3 million vehicles were sold in China, of which 1.36 million vehicles were equipped with traction electric motors in one combination or another. Chinese auto market demand is set to grow to 25.77 million units this year, UBS experts expect.
