Core i9-11900K overclocked to 5.2 GHz and compared with Core i9-10900K in games – so far not impressive
A pre-release sample of the new eight-core flagship Intel Core i9-11900K (Rocket Lake-S) processor fell into the hands of one of the Chinese reviewers. The enthusiast did not miss the opportunity to test the chip and compare the performance with the 10-core flagship model Core i9-10900K (Comet Lake-S).
The tests used a system with a motherboard on the Intel Z490 chipset, ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3090 graphics accelerator and 32 GB of DDR4-3600 MHz RAM. Both processors were manually overclocked to 5.2 GHz across all cores and cooled by an industrial chiller.
In the synthetic test of the CPU-Z program in the single-core performance mode, the Core i9-11900K scored 693 points. Thus, the new generation Rocket Lake-S was about 11% faster than the Core i9-10900K. At the same time, in the multi-core CPU-Z test, the new Intel chip scored 6,723 points, which was 13% less than the flagship model of the Comet Lake-S generation. The result is quite obvious, given that the representative of the 10th generation of Core processors has more physical cores and virtual threads.
GPU-Z confirmed that the discrete graphics accelerator used in the system was operating in PCI mode 4.0, which is an exclusive feature of the new Rocket Lake-S chips. Then the Core i9-11900K processor was tested in the popular Cinebench benchmark.
In a single-core test, the new product bypassed the old flagship, but quite naturally yielded to it in multi-threaded performance. But in the complex 3DMark benchmark, the processors showed approximately the same level of performance:
Further it turned out that the level of real gaming performance of the Core i9-11900K is lower than it was stated on the Intel graphics at the time of the presentation. At least this statement is true precisely for the pre-release sample. The final level of performance of the new blue flagship can only be judged after the final version of the processor appears on store shelves, and the first independent reviews of the final product begin to appear on the Web.
The pre-release sample of the Core i9-11900K was faster than the Core i9-10900K in only two of the six games launched by the Chinese enthusiast. At the same time, the difference was only a few frames per second. Recall that Intel in the presentation compared the gaming performance of the Core i9-11900K with the 12-core AMD Ryzen 9 5900X. According to Intel, its chip turned out to be up to 8% faster than the representative of the Zen 3 architecture in individual games, even despite the much higher number of cores and virtual threads in the latter.
During the presentation, the company also announced that in the automatic overclocking mode, the frequency of one of the Core i9-11900K cores can be increased to 5.3 GHz thanks to Thermal Velocity Boost technology. However, this will require a very efficient cooling system. On sale processors Rocket Lake-S are expected not earlier than March. However, at the presentation, Intel announced a more vague “first quarter of 2021”.
