Sony showed electric car VISION-S on open roads and revealed new details
12.01.2021 [11:27],
Konstantin Khodakovsky

A year ago, for CES 2021, Sony Corporation unexpectedly unveiled its Vision-S concept electric vehicle. Now a year later, for CES 2021, the Japanese company has released several videos demonstrating this concept. This is a fresh look at design and engineering, comments from partners, as well as a demonstration of tests of an electric vehicle on public roads near the engineering center in Graz, Austria.

Little has been heard about Sony’s EV project since last year’s CES debut, but luckily the company has given new insights. There was little data in last year’s announcement. Among the characteristics mentioned were 33 sensors for autonomous driving (cameras, radars, ultrasonic sensors and lidars), a surround sound system, a software-oriented design and two electric motors with a capacity of 268 horsepower (200 kW). Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 4.8 seconds for the car, and the maximum speed is 240 km / h.

There is still no information on release time, price or battery capacity. In fact, even in the presented videos, the display does not show the driving range and battery charge indicators, so we cannot even draw indirect conclusions about the capabilities of the car in this regard. Sony does not say a word about production plans or partnerships with other companies, which means that there is still a lot to be done before the VISION-S gets into the hands of real consumers.

However, the new videos offer some interesting ideas. Sony says it has increased the number of sensors for autonomous driving to 40. By itself, this does not mean anything, but, apparently, Sony engineers considered that 33 was not enough to form a complete picture of the environment.

Sony’s software-based design is also in the spotlight as the company aims to showcase how it leverages its entertainment expertise to create the best in-car software. The most eye-catching feature of the original VISION-S concept was the large widescreen display spanning the entire dashboard, and Sony seems to be sticking with this idea as it continues to develop the car in that direction. At one point, a PlayStation controller is shown connected to the screen where Little Big Planet, a PlayStation exclusive, is running.

Sony partners talk in the video about the importance of communication and cloud services in modern cars, and a Bosch spokesman praised the capabilities of the human-machine communication interface. We are talking about trainable systems for recognizing faces, speech and gestures, which are shown in the videos. For example, you can see a thermal image of the cockpit when the driver makes a hand gesture.

While Sony didn’t say exactly when the VISION-S will hit the market, Continental’s Horst Schaffer felt sentimentally that all stakeholders want the car to be commercialized as soon as possible. In a short video of road tests, there is no voice acting, but the Sony VISION-S is shown driving on snow-covered Austrian public and private roads. The car is camouflaged, but the automaker doesn’t seem to be hiding much – in addition, we already saw the car without camouflage at CES last year.
