China’s YMTC wants to launch trial production of 192-layer 3D NAND in the middle of this year, ahead of Samsung and Micron
Founded in 2021, Chinese company Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) is poised to overtake Samsung and Micron at the technological level, starting pilot production of 192-layer 3D NAND memory in the second half of the year. At the same time, it will master the monthly release of 100 thousand silicon wafers per month, claiming 7% of the world volume.

The Nikkei Asian Review once again reports on the Napoleonic plans of the young Chinese company YMTC. Its enterprise is located in the notorious Wuhan, but it did not stop working even in the midst of the COVID-19 epidemic last spring, and by the second half of this year it plans to double the production of silicon wafers to 100 thousand pieces per month. The market leader, Samsung Electronics, produces 480,000 silicon wafers, and the largest American manufacturer, Micron Technology, produces 180,000 silicon wafers monthly.
At the turn of processing hundreds of thousands of silicon wafers per month, YMTC can claim 7% of the global production of 3D NAND memory chips. The ambitions of the Chinese manufacturer are not limited to this. In June last year, the construction of the second phase of the enterprise in Wuhan began, which, after commissioning, will increase the production of silicon wafers to 200 thousand pieces per month.
It should be borne in mind that Samsung and Micron are just mastering the release of memory with a 176-layer layout, it is not supplied commercially, but YMTC is already hoping to outrun its famous competitors by offering customers 192-layer memory. The Chinese company mastered the mass production of 128-layer 3D NAND chips at the end of last year, and its development was completed in April of the same year. Experts have questions about the quality of such products, since the yield of products among 128-layer 3D NAND on the YMTC pipeline does not exceed 70%. And yet, it is difficult to deny the zeal of the Chinese company both in mastering new technologies and in expanding production.
Problems for the leading Chinese manufacturer of solid-state memory can be added both by the financial difficulties of the parent holding Tsinghua Unigroup and the likely US sanctions if access to foreign lithographic equipment for YMTC is closed. The Chinese authorities are interested in supporting the leading national producer, so much of its success will depend on US foreign policy under the new president.
