Researchers have learned to recognize text typed on a smartphone using smart speakers

British researchers have learned to recognize text typed on a smartphone using smart speakers. The methodology is based on technologies for processing sound signals that a mobile device emits when pressing keys on the on-screen keyboard. The corresponding article was published on arXiv.org.

The study was conducted by employees of the University of Cambridge. To successfully intercept data, attackers must have access to the smart speaker and the microphone located in it. In addition, hackers must have a copy of the device from which the text is read. It turned out that typing sounds are specific to smartphones and tablets, and even a screen film or case can affect them.

To conduct the experiment, the specialists needed a six-microphone ReSpeaker chip, which is used in assembling smart speakers, and a Raspberry Pi microcomputer. Using a chip, the researchers recorded the sound, and then, using a special algorithm, analyzed and correlated the sound with individual keys. For recognition, two methods were used – linear discriminant analysis and convolutional neural network.

Recognition accuracy depended on smartphone model and data type. When trying to recognize the pin code, the accuracy was about 15%, the words were recognized with an accuracy of 50%. The reasons for this difference in data recognition are not specified. To protect devices from this type of attack, the researchers suggested that manufacturers play third-party sounds when typing.
