Many Internet users use pixelation (severe reduction in resolution) to hide confidential information in videos and photos. However, now this method will be ineffective – an algorithm has appeared on the network that restores pixilated text in images.

A developer with the nickname Beurtschipper has published an image decryption utility called Depix on GitHub, written in Python.

The pixelization filter works as follows: the image is divided into blocks of the desired size, in each of them the base color is determined (the average value of all the shades of the block), after which the square is filled with a solid color. What is very important, the same elements, even in different images, will be pixelated in the same way.
The Depix algorithm uses just this principle – a pixelated image is loaded into the program (for now, this only works with text) and an alphabet in the form of a De Bruyne Sequence with the same font settings as in the pixelated fragment. Font settings include size, color, font itself, and HSL color model (hue, saturation and lightness).

After that, the algorithm splits into pixels the alphabet loaded into it and begins to search for matches in the blocks of the original pixelated image in order to find a suitable character.
