A fan remade the 1993 Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon games for modern OS
29.eleven.2021 [15:22],
Konstantin Khodakovsky

Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon are two action-adventure video games developed by Animation Magic and released by Philips Interactive Media for the Philips CD-i set-top box on October 10, 1993 in the US and December 25, 1993 in Europe. An amateur developer decided to remake them for modern platforms so that after 27 years those who wish can try them out.

Both games are based on The Legend of Zelda universe, but are not considered part of the official series and were the predecessors of the infamous Zelda’s Adventure game for CD-i. Three Zelda games for CD-i are considered some of the worst projects in the world The Legend of Zelda. Yet for one amateur developer Dopply on Twitter, Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon proved to be ideal ways to learn how to use the GameMaker game engine, and so over the course of four years, he gradually completely redesigned both games.

So, I decided to make re-imagined versions of the 1993 CD-i classics “The Faces of Evil” and “The Wand of Gamelon”. They are remakes using original assets, available for free download to play on Windows and Linux here:

“I wanted to prove to myself that I can make a game,” he said in the FAQ. – It all started as a joke between friends, but then I wanted to understand if I could actually achieve this. I dabbled with making games for a while, but I didn’t create anything complete. It was my chance to realize something (which, however, took 4 years). Redesigned versions of these notorious games were what I wanted to achieve. “.

Link: The Faces of Evil and Dopply’s Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon include widescreen support, updated mode for less tedious play, subtitles, improved sprites and unlockables. The games have been redesigned almost from scratch, so movements, enemy spawn, various other elements and features have changed. But the remakes are based on the originals and try to imitate them as much as possible. “I went out of my way to create what I think would look like a modern launch of these games,” the developer explained.

“I definitely underestimated the task at first (after all, it took me about four years to work in my spare time),” he continued. – Fortunately, the nature of the original games made it easier to create remakes using source resources and hid my lack of programming experience – I would definitely redo some elements of the code if I started from scratch now. But really, the whole point was to go through the whole „a simple “play from start to finish and see if I can reproduce and improve it.”.

What does Dopply think of the games themselves?? “I guess they’re okay. In my humble opinion, these new versions definitely improve on them. They have a terrible reputation, apart from the fun videos (which I love and which, by the way, didn’t get tired of hundreds of hours of testing), but if you update that depressing control scheme and increase performance, they are quite bearable. As a connoisseur of bad and weird games, I’ve definitely seen worse examples. I also think the background graphics are really great and the music is fantastic. I am very glad that people will get acquainted with an excellent soundtrack for the first time, “he said.

In the comments, people expressed a lot of warm words about the Dopply project on social networks, despite the bad reputation of both games among Zelda fans. And it looks like the wide audience response put Dopply in an awkward position. The obvious problem is that Nintendo can force a developer to remove all links the way it likes to do. But if the company takes this step, it recognizes the value of games that it would probably prefer to forget about. So maybe Dopply is safe.

Gotta say, it feels surreal to have so many people and places I’ve been fans of for a while like my release. Well maybe not “like”. More like bewildered by its existence lmao
