Quantum computers and qubits seem to be something distant and completely different from modern processors and PCs. At the same time, it is tempting to use all those developments that have been mined over the years of debugging semiconductor technical processes. Europeans are ready to throw a bridge between the production of silicon transistors and qubits: French researchers from CEA-Leti and employees of the University of Copenhagen have come up with valves for silicon qubits.

While qubits in one form or another are produced in limited quantities at universities, it remains to speak of quantum systems as something exceptional. Modern semiconductor manufacturing is a different matter. A piece of silicon with a side of one centimeter contains tens of millions of transistors. And it’s a pleasure to control a transistor. It’s not four or five wires from the cryogenic chamber for each qubit! Everything is simple and compact. Scientists expect something similar from spin qubits, in which a single electron will play the role of a qubit. It is theoretically possible to produce such silicon qubits in mass quantities on large silicon wafers.

An interesting silicon structure for organizing spin qubits was presented by a French institute from CEA-Leti, the possibilities of which were investigated by scientists from the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen. An article about the work was published about a week ago in Nature Communications. The French created an elementary array of four quantum dots, each of which is controlled by its own gate (switch). Each quantum dot has one electron. The spin of this electron is a qubit. And this is very good, since the spin reacts poorly to interference, which is important to reduce the level of errors and maintain a high level of matching of qubits (coherence).

In this study, scientists have confirmed that they can move individual electrons around an array of quantum dots and can place them in quantum dots. In this case, electrons can interact with each other in neighboring positions, which promises to lead to such a phenomenon as entanglement of qubits. In subsequent experiments, the researchers are going to use the control of electrons in the magnetic field and try to read the spins. We wish them good luck.
