Smartphone market will return to growth in 2021, but Huawei will not make it into the top six
05.01.2021 [15:26],
Vladimir Mironenko

The COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected the global economy in 2021, and the smartphone market was no exception. According to research by analyst firm TrendForce, the production of smartphones in the past year amounted to only 1.25 billion units, which is 11% less than the previous year. Top 6 leading smartphone brands, ranked by production volume, in 2021: Samsung, Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo. The most notable change in rankings from 2021 is the significant drop in Huawei’s market share.

TrendForce said Honor will act as an independent smartphone maker separate from Huawei. However, it is not yet known whether the “new” Honor will be able to attract the attention of consumers without the support of Huawei. In addition, Huawei and the new Honor will compete directly with each other in the future, especially if Huawei succeeds in further extricating itself from US trade sanctions. As the new Honor aims to increase production, Huawei will find it difficult to regain its smartphone market share.

Talking about the development of events until the end of 2021, TrendForce believes that the global smartphone market will gradually recover as people get used to the “new norms” established by the pandemic. What’s more, this year is likely to see a relatively noticeable wave of device replacements, as well as an increase in demand in emerging markets. Assuming these conditions are met, annual global smartphone production in 2021 could grow 9% to 1.36 billion units. With regard to the global smartphone brand ranking for 2021, Huawei expects a further and significant decline in production. This is due to the consequences of the introduction of US export restrictions and the separation of Honor into a separate structure.

TrendForce predicts Huawei will fall from third place in 2021 to seventh in 2021. Top six leaders in 2021 will include Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo and Transsion. Together they will own nearly 80% of the global smartphone market. Nevertheless, the pandemic will remain the central variable (or the greatest uncertainty) in the production forecast as it continues to have a significant impact on the global economy. In addition to the pandemic, the volume of production of smartphones in 2021 may also be affected by geopolitical instability and a lack of production capacity in the semiconductor market.

Thanks to the aggressive policy of the Chinese government to commercialize 5G, in 2021 the global production of 5G smartphones reached about 240 million units in a year, which corresponds to a penetration rate of 19%, with Chinese brands accounting for almost 60% of the market. While 5G will remain the main trend in the smartphone market this year, 5G infrastructure is resuming across the country and mobile processor makers will continue to roll out entry-level and mid-range 5G chips. Thus, the penetration rate of 5G smartphones is expected to grow sharply to 37% in 2021, while their production per year will amount to about 500 million units.
