CES 2021: LG Display proposes to put transparent OLED screens between visitors and bartender and seeks other uses for them
In keeping with its annual tradition, LG Display is preparing to showcase some new display technologies at CES 2021, this time focusing on showing areas where transparent OLED displays could be relevant in a pandemic.
The Korean company has created several demos for its online showroom, of which the most interesting (so far) is a 55-inch OLED transparent sushi bar restaurant. Visitors can browse menus or watch videos on the big screen, and watch the chefs prepare food, separated from the latter by this futuristic hygienic partition thanks to 40 percent transparency. In comparison, according to LG Display, the transparent LCD only provides 10% transparency.
In another demo, the company will place the same 55-inch transparent OLED panel at the end of the smart bed so that the user can enjoy close-up viewing while lying down without blocking the view of the rest of the bedroom. The screen has Cinematic Sound OLED (CSO) speakers built into the main body so no external speakers are required. At the touch of a button, the transparent screen can be partially or completely folded inside the main body, and in a partially folded state it allows you to display information such as time or weather.
LG Display will also show how the company’s 55-inch transparent OLED display can be applied on a train or subway. While in the carriage, passengers can look outward through a transparent display that will replace the traditional window. Its high transparency means passengers can still view the scenery outside the window while viewing information such as a subway map, weather or news at the same time.
Transparent OLED screens have been around for a while, but it wasn’t until last 2021 that this display technology first hit the public thanks to LG Display and Harrods. Then, in August of this year, LG Display helped install transparent OLED panels in the Beijing and Shenzhen subways. Perhaps, following Xiaomi with its transparent TV, LG will also launch an affordable device for ordinary buyers (and I would like to hope that at a lower price).
