Gravitational waves passing through supermassive black holes and the centers of large clusters of galaxies should retain traces of interactions with similar objects that go beyond the theory of relativity and other foundations of the Standard Model. Gravitational waves are oscillations of space-time, the source of which are massive objects moving with varying acceleration. Despite the fact that the existence of such waves more than a hundred years ago was predicted by Albert Einstein, scientists were able to record them for the first time only in 2021. Detection of gravitational waves is an important confirmation of general relativity. There are currently four research projects involved, two in the USA (LIGO), one in Italy (VIRGO) and one in Japan (KAGRA).

In recent years, physicists have managed to record dozens of bursts of gravitational waves, the sources of which are located hundreds of millions of light years from our planet. It should be noted that the absence of visible contradictions between the results of observations of different groups of researchers, the theory of relativity and other foundations of the Standard Model does not allow cosmologists to substantiate the existence of dark matter, dark energy and other phenomena that go beyond the limits of this theory.

Cosmologists’ new study could be useful in finding traces of phenomena beyond the Standard Model. Scientists were able to calculate how the structure of gravitational waves changes when they interact with space objects that have a huge mass and density. In the course of the study, it was possible to establish how the properties of gravitational waves will change when colliding with massive objects, if they are not subject to the limitations of the Standard Model. According to the obtained data, gravitational waves will behave unusual when interacting with large supermassive black holes. This unusual interaction is expressed in the formation of various forms of gravitational “echo”, the appearance of distortions and the occurrence of other changes.

Scientists have come to the conclusion that in the case when the source of gravitational waves and the black hole are located relatively close to the Milky Way, many of these changes can be captured by the instruments of the LIGO and VIRGO projects. If waves passing through the vicinity of massive objects do not have such properties, then the search field for “new physics” can be significantly reduced. Thanks to this, scientists plan to learn some of the properties of dark matter particles and the nature of dark energy.
