ASUS to unveil AMD Ryzen 5000H and GeForce RTX 30-series ROG Strix gaming laptops in January
29.12.2021 [22:24],
Nikolay Khizhnyak

ASUS confirms its intention to unveil new ROG Strix gaming laptops at CES 2021 next January. The manufacturer is going not only to update the models of its portable gaming systems with GeForce RTX 30 series graphics accelerators, but also for the first time for the series will present models based on AMD mobile processors.

Advertising materials published by ASUS itself do not report the exact characteristics of future gaming laptops, but the Chinese edition of ITHome shared interesting information about the upcoming innovations. According to him, ROG Strix laptops of the 2021 model year will be able to offer AMD Ryzen 5000H processors as a basis, up to the flagship model Ryzen 9 5900HX.

At the moment, it is not known how much this chip will differ from the version of Ryzen 9 5900H, which was reported today, but the VideoCardz resource suggests that the main difference will be in the declared TDP level of the processors, as well as their automatic overclocking potential. We assume the possibility of even manual overclocking.

As a graphics subsystem, the latest ASUS ROG Strix gaming laptops will offer mobile versions of the GeForce RTX 3060, RTX 3070 and RTX 3080. It is noted that this is the first time that a configuration of high-performance NVIDIA graphics cards and powerful AMD processors will be used in a gaming laptop.

It should be added that the announcement of powerful eight-core mobile Intel Tiger Lake-H45 chips, which will become direct competitors to AMD Ryzen 5000H (Cezanne, Zen 3), will take place after CES 2021, so ASUS may simply not have a choice in favor of either other processors. By the way, the market will also be presented with a quad-core Intel Tiger Lake-H35 with a reduced TDP. They will be offered as part of some laptop models, but these processors are not ideal for a gaming system. For this reason, most manufacturers will continue to release laptops based on the latest 10th generation Intel Comet Lake-H chips and the latest GeForce RTX 30-series graphics for some time.

An additional interesting feature of the ASUS ROG Strix gaming laptop based on Ryzen 5000 will be support for a 2K screen resolution (2560 × 1440 pixels) and refresh rates up to 165 Hz. For a long time, gamers have had to compromise by choosing laptops with 1080p and refresh rates up to 360Hz or options with 4K resolution and low refresh rates at 60Hz. The sweet spot in the form of high-frequency QHD screens could prove to be a very popular solution among gaming laptops in the coming year.
