China’s BYD intends to become a major player in the market for stationary energy storage systems
Tesla uses spent traction batteries in stationary storage systems, but the demand for new electric vehicles is so high that it cannot yet pay enough attention to this market segment. Chinese manufacturer BYD plans to become a major supplier of energy storage systems.

As the Nikkei Asian Review explains, to enter this market, BYD begins to cooperate with the young Chinese company Pandpower and the Japanese distributor Itochu, which will be engaged in the sale of final products in the United States, Asia and Europe. Now the Chinese market consumes up to half of the total number of electric vehicles produced in the world. The average service life of the traction battery of such vehicles is about eight years. If the effective capacity is lost to a level below 80% of the initial traction battery of an electric vehicle, it is necessary to replace it with a new one, but after that it can work for a long time in stationary energy storage systems. The latter are in demand not only as a backup power source at industrial enterprises, but also as a “buffer storage” in power plants that use wind or solar energy to generate electricity.
Under Chinese law, car manufacturers are responsible for the disposal of used traction batteries. BYD will be one of them to collect batteries across China, hand them over to a Pandpower partner founded by his former employees, and after testing, recyclable batteries will be combined by Itochu into large, stationary storage containers the size of a shipping container. One such battery is capable of storing up to 1000 kWh of electricity, and its cost will be 20-30% lower than that of an analogue using new batteries.
In five years, Itochu expects to earn about $ 100 million from the sale of stationary energy storage systems. These products will initially be marketed in Australia and Southeast Asia. According to analysts, by 2025, the market turnover of used traction batteries will be measured at 42 gigawatt-hours. In China, by this time, seven times more spent traction batteries will appear annually than produced in Europe. BYD expects to occupy 30% of the Chinese market. According to experts, in order to ensure stable income in this segment, companies need to deploy large-scale production, partners in the face of BYD, Pandpower and Itochu have all the possibilities for this. Already, 30% of the global battery market is controlled by two Chinese companies – BYD and CATL.
Other automakers also do not miss the opportunity to make money in the secondary market for traction batteries. Toyota Motor has teamed up with European and Japanese partners to recycle batteries in the European market.
