Adobe software doesn’t officially support emulation through Rosetta 2, but it’s not all bad
As part of the announcement of new Macs earlier this week, Apple mentioned that Adobe plans to release versions of its software compatible with Apple’s new M1 chip. The first will be Lightroom next month, and Photoshop will be released in early 2021. The launch dates for the rest of the software have not yet been announced, which is a problem, given that Adobe cannot officially support emulation through Rosetta 2 on new Macs yet.
Rosetta 2 is a built-in operating system emulation tool available in macOS 11 Big Sur. It allows you to run applications compiled for Intel x86 chips on Mac computers based on Apple’s ARM chips. Apple made it clear that many applications will continue to run through the Rosetta 2 emulation on the M1 chip and promised that some will run even better than on Intel chips.
However, on the compatibility page, Adobe has clearly stated that, for example, the popular Lightroom Classic app is not compatible with this emulation method: “Caution! Running Adobe applications in Rosetta 2 emulation mode on Apple devices with Apple Silicon M1 processors is not officially supported. Implementation of native support is planned “.
However, despite the warning, Adobe additionally reports that there are no known issues related to running Lightroom Classic 10 through the Rosetta 2 emulator on Apple devices with M1 processors running macOS 11 Big Sur. Thus, despite the lack of official support, at the moment you can use this software through Rosetta 2.
It should also be added that older versions of Lightroom, and apparently other Adobe software, are not compatible with macOS 11 Big Sur: “Unsupported versions of Lightroom Classic were not designed and tested to work with macOS 11 Big Sur. Older versions use 32-bit licensed components and installers and cannot be installed, uninstalled, or activated after upgrading to macOS 11 Big Sur. If you’ve already upgraded to macOS 11 Big Sur, use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to remove older versions. “.
In a comment to PetaPixel after Apple’s presentation, Adobe confirmed that even after the release of Lightroom Classic and Photoshop compiled for Apple’s ARM chips, the company will continue to support Intel-based Macs. Currently, Creative Cloud subscribers are unlikely to experience much of a problem on any of the three new Apple Macs, although Adobe was unlikely to fully test every possible scenario for its software on the new Apple ARM devices.
