Now, Mobileye representatives from Reuters explain that it is the transition to the use of proprietary lidars that will allow the company to offer components for autopilot systems in the consumer sector, which together will increase the cost of the car by several thousand dollars instead of tens of thousands of dollars. Recall that earlier Mobileye estimated the budget of “robotization” of one taxi crew at $ 15-20 thousand using Luminar lidars. Over time, the cost of related components and activities should have dropped to $ 5,000 per car.

Mobileye representatives assure that, among other things, the transition to the use of the company’s own lidars will allow getting closer to this milestone. Luminar employees were somewhat surprised by such statements, according to Reuters, and explained that the existing lidars of the brand with a margin exceed the requirements of Mobileye both in price and in technical characteristics, and the contract with the Israeli company provides for cooperation after 2022.

For Mobileye itself, the mentioned year 2022 will be a turning point in the sense that commercial operation of robotic taxis based on the components of this Israeli company, part of Intel, should begin on the streets of three cities of the world by that time. According to Mobileye CEO Amnon Shashua, cited by Reuters, the company’s lidar uses frequency-modulated continuous wave technology, operating in a different way than Luminar’s solution. Developments by Intel’s parent company in the field of silicon photonics may come in handy for Mobileye when creating its own lidar. Apparently, Mobileye will produce components for the lidar on the side. At least the EyeQ6 processors, which will enter the market in 2023, will be manufactured using 7nm technology by TSMC, like their predecessors. Over time, its own lidars will allow Mobileye to replace Luminar products in the commercial sector – the same robotic taxis.
