Valve launches Steam Playtest – a tool for simplified game testing without keys and mailings
Valve announced the launch of the Steam Playtest game testing tool to make life easier for developers. Instead of sending out beta keys (getting over a thousand keys requires a separate request) or releasing a test version as a separate product, studios will be able to invite players themselves.
Steam Playtest works both in open (all applications are accepted) and in limited (invitations are received by a certain number of randomly selected players) mode. Developers will be able to independently decide when to test, how many users will get access and when to increase the number of participants. The tool uses Steamworks – no keys need to be activated. Applications are submitted directly on the game page on Steam: after clicking the button, the person who wants to get into the queue, and when there are free places, he receives a notification.
The developer interface displays three categories of users: granted access, registered and invited in a special order. After testing is complete, the game is removed from the libraries, and the “Request access” button disappears from its page in the store.
A separate AppID is used to download and launch the test version, so it will not replace the release one and will not hurt to add the game to the wishlist, and the time spent in it will not be taken into account in the full version. Also, testers will not be able to leave feedback on this project.
Steam Playtest is still in beta testing and may change for a full release. Developers who want to use the tool must submit an application via the feedback form and explain why they want to conduct a challenge and what information they expect to receive from players. The system is already in use in the card game Total War: Elysium.
Another important point concerns monetization. There is no charge for using the Steam Playtest: the tool is completely free for both developers and players. Valve also stressed that the new system is being introduced as an alternative to existing testing methods. It does not conflict with early access: you can test games even when they are in a pre-release state.
According to experts from Valve, the company decided to create such a tool due to numerous requests from studios, both large and small: “Developers want to freely test without worrying about user reviews and statistics of adding to the wishlist. […] We know that they are now using various unofficial solutions: for example, releasing a demo version (which is actually an open beta) or a free prologue. They use whatever is available to them to build a community and collect statistics. These problems needed to be addressed, so we offered an official tool that is easier for developers and more consistent for players. “.
