The all-new macOS Big Sur will be released on November 12: deep optimizations for ARM, support for iOS applications, and more
10.eleven.2021 [23:04],
Konstantin Khodakovsky

In June, Apple introduced Mac OS 11 Bug Sur, the most significant update to its desktop OS in a decade. Renumbering from 10.X by 11.0 well deserved: the platform brings not only a lot of innovations and changes in design, but also paves the way to a bright future – without Intel and x86.

The interface has undergone a lot of changes and has become much closer to Apple’s mobile operating systems. As for the transition to the ARM architecture, the Rosetta 2 emulator is integrated into the new OS, which allows you to run on new computers applications developed both for machines with Intel processors and for the company’s mobile operating systems. The previous version of Rosetta was included with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, released in 2021, which marked the complete rejection of the PowerPC processors that were used in Macs before the transition to the Intel platform.

Apple unveils its first proprietary M1 SoC, designed for desktop computers at today’s event. And macOS Big Sur is fully optimized for this platform. For example, Mac now wakes up instantly when turned on, similar to iPhone or iPad.

The company also promises the fastest possible operation of the software on the new OS, including the updated Safari browser. Apple says the browser is 1.5x faster in JavaScript and twice as responsive on the M1 compared to previous Intel-based MacBooks.

Part of the gain is due to the unified M1 memory: the processor and graphics share RAM and work closely together – all of which are actively used to speed up work. Thanks to the high performance of the M1, as well as optimizations and the use of technologies such as the low-level Metal API, even complex tasks are completed faster, such as 3D animation, RAW video editing, 6K color grading, and more.

Apple noted that macOS Big Sur is optimized for maximum efficiency: the platform can intelligently switch tasks between high-performance CPU cores and energy-efficient ones (like modern mobile operating systems like iOS or Android), depending on the current load and needs. This results in quiet operation for simple tasks and longer laptop battery life.

Of course, the security functions of the M1 chip are also used: this is a secure download, and automatic encryption of the data of all files, and means of protection during code execution. Apple claims the M1 and macOS pairing provides the most secure PC environment available on the market.

It is worth saying that Apple has already optimized all its applications for the ARM architecture – this is not only the software bundled with macOS, but in general all the programs produced by the Cupertino giant: Pages, Numbers, Keynote, GarageBand, iMovies, Logic Pro, and so on. Even heavy software like Final Cut Pro has the benefit of making complex tasks up to 6x faster on the M1 than on older mobile Intel chips.

But that’s not all: Apple also introduced the concept of universal apps (yes, it sounds familiar, in the spirit of Microsoft). Such programs can be executed directly on Apple ARM and Intel x86 – depending on the Mac used, without any emulation. Of course, there is still relatively little such software, but it already exists, and there will only be more. What’s more, the Rosetta 2 emulator, according to Apple, runs old x86 software very efficiently without upgrading to a universal app. Apple says Metal’s most graphics-intensive x86 apps run even faster on the M1 than on older Macs with integrated graphics.

Finally, for the first time, Mac users will be able to run their favorite iOS and iPad OS apps right on the Mac, without any emulation. This gives macOS Big Sur access to a host of optimized, albeit mobile in nature, software and loads of games.

Apple also promised to launch macOS 11 Big Sur on November 12. Of course, existing Mac owners will also receive a lot of innovations. You can read more about them on the Apple website.
