The Wizardry series will return: the Japanese company Drecom has bought the copyrights and will release a new part
Sir-Tech’s Wizardry RPG series, which shaped the genre in many ways and influenced Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, continues. Worldwide franchise and trademark rights have been bought by the Japanese company Drecom, which plans to release at least one new part.
Drecom acquired the trademarks Wizardry 6, Wizardry 7, Wizardry 8 and Wizardry Gold. No details about the next game yet.
Drecom is based in Tokyo and mainly deals with mobile games. Her projects include Derby Stallion Masters, Chocotto Farm, Digimon ReArise (for Bandai Namco) and Kirara Fantasia (for Aniplex). Together with ForwardWorks she created Disgaea RPG and mobile version of Everybody’s Golf. It is possible that the new Wizardry will also be released on mobile platforms. The company is going to buy the rights to other popular series, as well as continue to work on its own.
Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord
The original Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is one of the first Dungeons & Dragons-style computer RPGs and the first with colorful graphics. It was released in 1981 for the Apple II and has become one of the most popular projects for this platform. By June 1982, its sales reached 24 thousand copies (on the account of the first part of Ultima at that time there were only 20 thousand units), and by 1989 they crossed the half-million mark. The game launched a trilogy that included the coolly-received Wizardry II: The Knight of Diamonds (1982) and Wizardry III: Legacy of Llylgamyn (1983), which received positive reviews.
1987 Wizardry IV: The Return of Werdna was very different from its predecessors and offered the role of the antagonist of the original. Despite its uniqueness and other advantages, it failed in sales. Wizardry V: Heart of the Maelstrom (1988) and Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge (1990) received mixed reviews, unlike Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant (1992), which was named the best RPG of the year by several editions. Wizardry 8 (2021) was also well received, with IGN listed as one of the 100 best games in the history of the genre.
Versions of the last three parts of the main series are available on Steam with support for modern systems from Nightdive Studios.
The series includes many offshoots (most of them were released only in Japan), including the proprietary MMORPG Wizardry Online. In January this year, Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls from Japanese Acquire was ported to PC.
The Canadian-American studio Sir-Tech, which has existed since 1979, was finally closed in 2021. Besides Wizardry, she created the tactical RPG Jagged Alliance 2.
