A unique program for controlling hundreds of satellites in orbit has been tested in Russia
Projects for the deployment of orbital constellations of hundreds of satellites in the form of OneWeb, Starlink or the Russian “Sphere” systems require careful design and take into account so many factors that one cannot do without developed software. As stated on the website of the Foundation for Advanced Study (FPI), until recently, there were no software tools in the world that comprehensively solve this problem. Now Russia has such an instrument.
As a press release on the MIPT website informs us: “Within the framework of a joint project of the Advanced Research Fund and MIPT Integral-D, the first Russian software package for the design of multi-satellite space systems has been successfully tested. Upon completion of the project, which is scheduled for 2022, the software package will have enhanced functionality, allowing you to design constellations of several thousand spacecraft “.
The deployment of multi-satellite constellations under the Sphere program will begin in 2021. In total, the program will unite up to 600 satellites, including more than 330 communication satellites, 55 navigation devices and about 250 satellites for observing and exploring the Earth. Obviously, this will take years, and the Integral-D software will take on a significant part of the design and management of such a huge group.
“The calculations carried out during testing allowed us to solve a number of applied problems of modeling mixed constellations consisting of spacecraft for remote sensing of the Earth and communications, including the optimization of control parameters for promising optical monitoring systems for near-Earth space,” the press release said in confirmation of the importance of using the Integral -D “in the program” Sphere “.
The software package of the “Integral-D” project makes it possible to calculate the dynamics of multisatellite constellations, their fulfillment of the assigned tasks and creates a mathematical description of the activities of spacecraft as part of the constellations. The tool allows you to obtain data for multivariate calculations, which will be the best clue for making the right decisions when designing systems from hundreds and thousands of satellites in orbit.
