AMD helped Godfall and DiRT 5 developers add ray-traced shadows, but the difference is subtle
29.10.2021 [18:18],
Konstantin Khodakovsky

AMD did not reveal many details during yesterday’s presentation of the Radeon RX 6000, including details about hardware support for ray tracing. However, the company did mention that it has helped implement ray tracing (via Microsoft DirectX Raytracing) in two games due out very soon: Counterplay Games ‘action RPG Godfall and Codemasters’ DiRT 5 races.

And on AMD’s DirectX 12 Ultimate page, the company posted comparative screenshots of both games with and without ray-traced effects enabled. Frankly, in both cases, the difference is minimal. Shadows seem to be more accurate, richer and more detailed, but that’s all: I would like to hope that such subtle improvements will not affect performance too much. By the way, DiRT 5 also supports Variable Rate Shading (VRS) technology.

These are two of the DirectX 12 Ultimate-optimized games AMD appears to be working on, alongside Blizzard’s World of Warcraft: Shadowlands (which also has ray-traced shadows and VRS support), Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6, and The Riftbreaker by EXOR Studios.

According to a tweet posted by an official Microsoft DirectX 12 account, all of these 5 games should include both ray-traced shadows and VRS support, although we haven’t seen either of these for Far Cry 6 and The Riftbreaker so far.

Given that all of these ray tracing implementations are based on Microsoft DirectX Raytracing, you can safely expect them to work on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2000 and 3000 series GPUs.

By the way, one of the performance tests of specialized Ray Accelerator (RA) cores flashed in AMD’s press slides: according to the Microsoft DXR SDK Procedural Geometry, the Radeon RX 6800 XT video card was about 25% slower than the GeForce RTX 3080 in hardware ray tracing. Of course, extensive benchmarks will be required to fully appreciate the performance differences between the latest AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards.
