Alien: Isolation’s Creators Explain the Origin of the Game and the Ditching of the Back Camera
Key Creative Assembly employees in an interview with YouTube channel Noclip talked about the history of the development of the horror movie Alien: Isolation in general and the abandonment of the back camera in particular.
The fact that Alien: Isolation could be (and has been for a long time) a third-person game became known during the GDC 2021. At the same conference, an early conceptual prototype of the future project was shown.
According to Clive Gratton, technical director of Alien: Isolation, in early 2021, when the team just got the idea for the project, Sega wanted to see from the studio not “Alien”, but a simulator of the Olympic Games.
The team decided not to abandon the idea and in the “shortest possible time” prepared a non-interactive demo (in the video below from 4:20) for demonstration to the Sega management of the then unnamed game, which tipped the scales in favor of the developers.
As for the third-person view (in the video above from 7:14), Creative Assembly was forced to such a prospect by the lack of sensible first-person horror on the market: neither about Outlast, nor about P.T. at that time the public had not yet heard.
Alien: Isolation creative director Alistair Hope recalls spending a lot of time with the shoulder camera: “[In this format, the project offered] a good experience. Nice, but completely different “.
In the end, the team decided that the first-person view of Alien: Isolation would be better and by demonstrating two versions of the project to Sega management, they obtained permission to change the perspective to what was demonstrated in the original prototype.
It is also noteworthy that during development – after the failure of Aliens: Colonial Marines – Creative Assembly decided to show only real footage from Alien: Isolation and not to splurge on potential buyers.
Alien: Isolation was released in October 2021 on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and reached the Nintendo Switch in December 2021. The rating of the project on Metacritic ranges from 78 to 83 points, depending on the target platform.
Alien: Isolation reached 2.1 million copies by March 31, 2021, but Sega was unhappy with the result. In this regard, there is no sequel in the plans. Creative Assembly itself is now working on a tactical shooter under a new license.
